Pineau des Charentes was born here, in Saintonge.

According to legend, a winegrower mistakenly poured some fresh grape must into a barrel containing Cognac eau-de-vie. A few years later, he discovered a new natural mistelle in his forgotten barrel…

and the Saintonge Patois:

Barthélémy Gautier was born in 1846 in Pons, in Saintonge. He became well known as a cartoonist in 1876 thanks to his Croquis Saintongeais (Saintonge sketches), capturing the rural soul of Saintonge through his caricatures. His talent brought him to Paris where he became a famous cartoonist in renowned publications such as Le Gaulois and La Vie Parisienne. Gautier’s Croquis are still famous today in Charentes where they are highly sought-after by Saintonge Patois enthusiasts.

As a tribute to this cherished Charentes mind, we have chosen to present Barthélémy Gautier’s cartoons. He was a man of our land and had a talent for sketching 19th-century rural daily life.

Like him, we have sought to capture the essence of the Saintonge terroir and soul, producing outstanding batches of Pineau des Charentes.

The Saintonge Patois is a rich local legacy. With this “bilingual” presentation, we are campaigning for the preservation and transmission of our beautiful local language. We warmly thank René Ribéraud from Les Durathieurs d’Jhonzat Patois theatre association for his excellent translation.

PINEAU BIO 5 ANS LOT AB-15

75 cL, 17,1% vol

Appearance: a golden colour flecked with bright notes.
Bouquet: tart and floral notes of rose and woodland.
Palate: a tart, fleshy palate develops into smooth sensations of vine flower, toast and cherry clafoutis pastry notes. A very nice balance.

Serve chilled. Enjoy it on the rocks or in cocktails or as an aperitif.
Give it a fresh twist with an exotic fruit salad.

PINEAU LOT 04-83

75 cL, 17,8% vol

Appearance: a golden colour flecked with hints of copper.
Bouquet: a complex and outstanding bouquet with liquorice, cocoa, toasted almond and pastry notes.
Palate: delicate and slightly enchanting astringency with touches of prune, liquorice and vermouth, followed by a light smoky finish and deliciously smooth tannins. A typical example of Charentais rancio.

Serve chilled. Enjoy it on the rocks or in cocktails or as an aperitif.
Give it a fresh twist with blue cheese and fig chutney.

PINEAU LOT 82-01

75 cL, 19,3%

Appearance: a dark and intriguing ebony colour.
Bouquet: a discreet first nose, then the aromas reveal themselves: old cognac, walnut liqueur, cinnamon and a cigar box.
Palate: the attack is vivid and sharp, opening up to cocoa, fig and gingerbread notes. A long, slightly smoky finish.

Serve chilled or around 18°C to 20°C. Enjoy it on the rocks or in cocktails or as an aperitif. Give it a fresh twist with foie gras or a chocolate dessert. It is also an ideal partner for Cuban cigars.
